About The Department

The Department of Sociology, Mizoram Christian College was established in the year 2020 in the midst of COVID-19 with a total number of 30 students who opted for Sociology as Core (major) subject. The Department was started by two faculty, Mr Lalmuansanga Khawlhring and Mr Vanlalpeka, who joined the college on 1st October, 2020. Mr Lalmuansanga took the charge of ‘Head of Department’ (HOD) since its inception. From July 2024, Mr Vanlalpeka was appointed as the Head of Department by the Governing Board of the college. Mrs Lalhruaimawii joined the Department in the year 2022 and Dr Lallawmsanga joined the Department in the year 2024. Currently, the department has a strength of four faculties.

The Department of Sociology, Mizoram Christian College aims to nurture and develop students to become a responsible person in every branch of their activity, thus shaping and moulding the personality of every student to become a responsible member for their family and the society at large, is the manifest function of the Department. The Department thus aims to develop a deep understanding of social dynamics, foster critical thinking and cultivate livelihood ideas, strategies and skills among students. By promoting academic excellence, encouraging active participation in community engagement, and offering a comprehensive curriculum and pedagogy, the department seeks to prepare students for meaningful contributions to society and successful careers in various fields.

‘Dialogical Learning’ which the Department called ‘Interactive Learning’ was the main learning pedagogy of the department which was a Teacher-Student Centred learning method. The Department of Sociology thus offers interactive learning opportunities that engage students in hands-on activities, group discussions, and real-world projects. This approach encourages active participation, critical analysis, and collaborative problem-solving, helping students to deeply understand sociological concepts and their application in society. Although achieving academic excellence was upheld by the department, however the main goal of the department lies in producing responsible and employable citizen for the society.

Department traditions and practices:

1) Department meeting is held before the beginning of every academic session where distribution of classes and topics to be taught by different teachers and worked out in advanced as a preparatory measure for the new session.

2) Induction programme for freshers’ is held exclusively for the newly admitted freshers (1st Semester students) by the department on every first day of the session.

3) The department-maintained student profiles to keep a detailed record of their academic and extracurricular activities, personal information, and progress throughout their studies. This system helps in tracking students’ performance, supporting academic advising, and ensuring that students’ needs are met. The profiles typically include data such as enrollment details, grades, attendance, participation in college activities, and other relevant information that aids in the overall development of the students.

4) The department has emphasized counselling and mentoring for its students where students of the same caliber are identified, formed into group and assigned to a particular teacher for special care and mentoring. This system is designed to provide students with academic guidance, personal support, and career advice, fostering a holistic approach to education.

5) The Department has implemented a WhatsApp group for teachers and parents as part of its communication strategy. This initiative is designed to foster closer collaboration and communication between the faculty and the parents of students, ensuring that both parties are well-informed and engaged in the students’ academic journey.

6) The Department places significant importance on Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) as part of its holistic educational approach. Recognizing that education extends beyond the classroom, the department encourages students to engage in a variety of co-curricular activities to develop skills and competencies that complement their academic learning.

7) The Department of Sociology often invites external experts and professionals for various academic and extracurricular activities, enhancing the educational experience for students. These invitations serve multiple purposes, contributing to a well-rounded and dynamic learning environment.

The main mission of the department is to nurture our students to enable them to become responsible citizens with a global perspective through critical academic and field engagements. This enables them to inculcate 21st century skills and contribute towards social change and sustainable development.
