MCC Green Commute Day

Mizoram Christian College (MCC), under the initiative of its Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), observed Green Commute Day on 10^th September 2026. The Green Commute Day is one of the College’s best practice initiatives promoting environmental sustainability, healthy lifestyles, and eco-friendly commuting.

Through this initiative, the College seeks to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from private vehicle use, promote physical and mental well-being, raise awareness of sustainable transportation and reduce traffic congestion. More broadly, it aims to foster environmental stewardship and collective responsibility within the College and the community. The initiative further aligns with the objectives of key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Four starting points—Chanmari, Israel Point, Temple, and Synod Office—were designated, from where students and faculty members walked approximately 7 kms to the College. Participants carried posters to raise awareness for environmental sustainability, reduction of air pollution and traffic congestion, and the physical and mental health benefits of walking. As part of the initiative, 163 vehicles normally used for commuting, in addition to the College Bus, were kept off the road, resulting in an estimated reduction of 1,862 kms in vehicle travel and savings of approximately Rs. 5,850 in diesel and petrol costs, demonstrating the College’s contribution to both environmental sustainability and resource conservation.

The best practice initiative successfully promoted sustainable commuting, environmental responsibility, and healthy lifestyles while encouraging the community to contribute collectively towards a greener and healthier future.
